چکیده

Cartilage Tissue Engineering. Joint pain and functional impairment due to cartilage damage from osteoarthritis and other means is a major source of disability for adults the world over. Cartilage is an avascular tissue with a very limited capacity for self repair. Current medical and surgical approaches to cartilage repair also have limited efficacy, and in all cases fail to completely restore a normal, healthy cartilage phenotype. Tissue engineering is a relatively new approach to cartilage repair that seeks to fabricate a replacement tissue, indistinguishable from healthy, native tissue. The basic idea of the tissue engineering approach is to seed tissue synthesizing cells into a shapeable, biocompatible/bioabsorbable scaffold that serves as a temporary extracellular matrix with a localized source of bioactive molecules to direct the development of new tissue. The challenge of tissue engineering is to identify cells, scaffolds, and growth conditions that will be optimal for tissue regeneration. The goal of the current studies was to evaluate one aspect of all three of the major components of cartilage tissue engineering: cell source, scaffolding material and preparation, and controlled growth factor delivery. We evaluated the chondrogenic potential of human nasal chondrocytes grown in calcium alginate in an in vivo culture system, the potential of computer-aided design and injection molding with calcium alginate to reliably reproduce complex geometries with high dimensional tolerances, and the potential for the controlled

Investigation of effective parameters on fabrication of alumina parts by low pressure injection molding (LPIM) method

Low pressure injection molding (LPIM) method in this paper is investigated as a method of forming alumina parts. This is one of the methods of making engineering ceramics with complex shapes and high dimensional accuracy. In this method, a binder system (paraffin wax + carnuba wax) was used as a plastic agent for easy formation of alumina particles. Different parameters such as feedstock temper...

Image-guided tissue engineering of anatomically shaped implants via MRI and micro-CT using injection molding.

This study demonstrates for the first time the development of engineered tissues based on anatomic geometries derived from widely used medical imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Computer-aided design and tissue injection molding techniques have demonstrated the ability to generate living implants of complex geometry. Due to its complex geom...

Viability of Bioprinted Cellular Constructs Using a Three Dispenser Cartesian Printer.

Tissue engineering has centralized its focus on the construction of replacements for non-functional or damaged tissue. The utilization of three-dimensional bioprinting in tissue engineering has generated new methods for the printing of cells and matrix to fabricate biomimetic tissue constructs. The solid freeform fabrication (SFF) method developed for three-dimensional bioprinting uses an addit...

Normal and Parallel Permeability of Preform Composite Materials used in Liquid Molding Processes: Analytical Solution

The permeability of the preform composite materials used in liquid molding processes such as resin transfer molding and structural reaction injection molding is a complex function of weave pattern and packing characteristics. The development of tools for predicting permeability as a function of these parameters is of great industrial importance. Such capability would speed process design and op...
